GOOD MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

Good management is critical for effective lice control.

  • Viper will provide protection against re-infestation for four weeks when applied within 24 hours of shearing.
  • Treat all sheep on the property at the same time. Avoid split shearing.
  • Muster each paddock thoroughly to ensure all sheep are treated.
  • Conduct a second muster if necessary.
  • Check boundary fences to prevent untreated or lice-infested sheep from joining treated mobs.
  • Do not mix treated sheep with untreated sheep for at least six weeks after treatment.
  • Do not mix treated sheep with lousy sheep or those of unknown lice status.
  • Ensure sheep are cleanly shorn. Grass seeds, lumpy wool or flystrike can hinder shearing and may reduce efficacy.
  • Avoid treating ewes less than six weeks before lambing commences or while ewes are lambing or have lambs less than two weeks of age at foot, as lice can persist and infest lambs.
  • If ewes have lambs aged two weeks to two months of age at shearing time, shear and treat the ewes and also treat the lambs as an unshorn lamb. If lambs are greater than 8 weeks of age then shear and treat the lambs using the off shears dose rate table.
